Study of the Carbochlorination Process with CaCl2 and Water Leaching for the Extraction of Lithium from Spent Lithium-Ion Batteries

The abundant use of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in a wide variety electric devices and vehicles will generate large number depleted batteries, which contain several valuable metals, such as Li, Co, Mn, Ni, present the structure cathode material (LiMO2). work investigates extraction lithium, lithium chloride, from spent LIBs by carbochlorination roasting. starting samples consisted mixture anode materials different known black mass. Calcium chloride was used chlorinating agent, carbon reducing agent. mass, calcium were mixed 50:20:30 w/w % proportions. Non-isothermal thermogravimetric tests up to 850 °C isothermal at 350, 500, 700 carried out an inert atmosphere. It observed that reaction starts 500 °C. An percentage 99% attained through characterization results indicate CaCO3, Co and, lesser extent, CoO, NiO, MnO2 are roasted sample after processes washing, filtering, drying.
